TOPIC: Coral Vision: Artificial Intelligence for Reef Caretakers in a Century of Climate Change
Coral reefs, known as “rainforests of the ocean”, harbor rich biodiversity and support marine life. It is well known that reefs are degraded by ocean warming and acidification, which will increase through much of the 21st century. The Coral Vision project aims to improve reef health during climate change by using machine learning analysis of large photographic data sets to compute strategies for selectively breeding hardy corals and transplanting them onto threatened reefs. We hope that this treatment will produce reefs that will be resilient to the effects of climate change, and thus will continue to protect life on Earth. This talk will cover the present status and future directions of Coral Vision, from both scientific and dharmic perspectives.
Philip Heller is a native San Franciscan. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley in 1977, and then moved to Silicon Valley. He worked as a programmer, author, and speaker for a few decades before deciding that a programmer should program about something beneficial. He entered graduate school, earning an M.S. degree in Computer Science from San Jose State University in 2009 and a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from U.C. Santa Cruz in 2014. He spent a postdoctoral year at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories as a Smithsonian Scholar, and then joined the Computer Science faculty at San Jose State University in 2016. He has been meditating and participating in IMC activities since 2013.
